Question relating to the Wasteland series

I've never played any of the older games and was wondering if they are separate stories, or do you need to play the older games before getting into 3?

I love post apocalyptic / distopian games, but have to admit I have not played many CRPG's, nor am I a huge fan of turn based combat. Is this stilj a game I could enjoy, as I really want a new RPG story to play. Thank you.

You don't, no. 3 follows on the heels of 2's story, but it's also set far enough away that you'll just be missing out on some references and maybe a couple "who is this and why should I care about them" moments.
