Flat color floating interface

Post by Ovocean »

Another thing that changed in a bad way in RPGs after 2002 is the replacement of hand painted single-piece interfaces with boring flat 'modern' stuff floating around the screen. While in general I am all for freedom and options, in the case of the interface I'll glady trade the resizable, movable, but bad looking and immersion-breaking interface pieces with some more static but beautiful hand made, seamless UI bordering the world view.

We surely can make less static and space-using than BG's interface, but please, hand painted and seamless first!

I agree, not too sterile stuff. The worst is the HUD used in Fallout 3/New Vegas. Monochrome glowing lines and numbers, completely without personality, and boring to look at.

I don't see the problem with Neverwinter Nights' Interface since it's transparent. It's beautiful and very functional.

Functional, sure, but "beautiful"... for one of the most generic UI style ever, well I guess you're not hard to please. I'm not trying to be contemptuous, but I sure have a hard time understanding people's tastes sometimes.
Transparency doesn't excuse the bland look, for me it mostly just makes the whole thing look messy and not much less intrusive on the world view.

I wish I could make a poll.

The NWN games for some reason had pretty awful art direction across the board.

In any case, most modern games don't even have that. I'd gladly take NWN's interface over an unmodded consolized Skyrim-style interface with HUEG FONTS.

Agreed OP. I miss the old interfaces.

Agree with the OP.
I want a good, solid, old-school interface.
I don't like floating menus and b/w transparency.

i vote for nice minimalistic non-ransparent UI

Dragon Age 1 had nice UI, and I am not talking about the style.
