Will Wasteland 2 be the "killer app" of the Switch?
It’s often said that the past is the best predictor of the future. If that’s true, the arrival of Wasteland 2 on the Switch could herald a new round of success for Nintendo’s console. Wasteland 2 is an established and successful game, it should play well within the Switch’s hardware constraints, and it falls within a genre that has been very successful on previous handheld consoles.

Wasteland 2 is a turn-based, tactical RPG set in a post-apocalyptic world. It began as a Kickstarter project with a goal of $900K, ended up raising $2.9 million, and was named the Game of the Year by PC World in 2014. It’s a deep and challenging game with great writing and so many branching storylines that you’d have to dedicate a sizeable chunk of your life to the game to experience them all.

Wasteland 2 originally appeared on PC and was ported successfully to the PS4 and Xbox One. Porting games to the Switch that were designed for these more powerful platforms can be challenging. The Switch version of Doom, for example, is clearly inferior to its console counterparts.

Wasteland 2 may not have this problem. Its turn-based gameplay shouldn’t stress the CPU in the Switch, and its graphics style and isometric viewpoint don’t place the heavy demands on the GPU that are seen in most triple-A games. The result will likely be a game that looks good and plays well both docked and undocked.

High quality undocked play could be a strong selling point for Wasteland 2 and a way for Nintendo to expand market penetration for the Switch. Tactical RPGs such as the Fire Emblem, Shin Megami Tensei and Etrian Odyssey series have traditionally done well on handheld platforms like the 3DS. An audience that enjoys this kind of game on handheld devices already exists. A number of tactical RPGs have been announced for the Switch but, thus far, none have made an appearance. If and when the others appear, Wasteland 2 could join them in attracting a different kind of player to the Switch.

The past few years have seen a renaissance in tactical RPGs like Wasteland 2 that began life on PC and moved successfully to console. Pillars of Eternity, Divinity Original Sin 1, and Torment: Tides of Numenera all followed this path. If Wasteland 2 finds an audience on the Switch, maybe the others will make their way to the console as well. The Switch could very well replace the 3DS as the handheld home of great tactical RPGs.

And here is why I joined up today! I am huge into the style of game this is, and feel it is a wonderful example of not only a well done post apocalyptic game, but fans making possible something for fans.

And owning a Switch myself but no other console it has yet been released on.... well I am naturally psyched. If I could I would preorder it right now. No joke. Just.... just take my money.

But I am off track. Seeing this coming for Switch (hopefully around my birthday if the rumor mill is right!) is just wonderful.

You guys rock.
