Bring Back the Old Typewriter Font!

Post by Magistross » October 13th, 2015, 10:10 am

I registered to this board support only to support your 4th claim regarding the new font used by the dialogue engine. It immediately jumped at my face... Where is my "easy on the eye, mono-spaced like an old typewriter" courrier font ? It felt so in place, now we have this generic Arial like sans-serif font that simply doesn't feel Wasteland-esque at all.

Please give us the option to use the old font! It was much easier to read.

I really don’t get about choosing this new, horrible font. I wouldn’t mind playing with this new out-of-style font, but the new one is so pale that you can hardly read it. It hurts my eyes that I don’t really like to play with that. I guess we can thank for additional voice-acting in the DC (even when different voice-actors were used for the same character, like Angela) that we can rather listen than read now.
Once again, I did some screenshots to better show the difference of the old and new font in small and medium size. I doubt many will play with the larger font sizes anyway.

Yes this is something that is seriously, seriously hampering my enjoyment of this release. Wouldn't have thought that such a small thing has that much of an impact but it does. Damn this is just plain bad and feels out of place. What's the rationale behind this change anyway? Why have two different fonts in one UI?
The antialiasing is bad enough as it is, give PC Players the option to revert that change or tell me how i can do it myself, if that is possible.

I like the new one a lot more. Old one was just plain painful to read.

If one has trouble reading monospaced courier on any medium or resolution they might seriously consider a reading aid.
The issue is less one of legibility but of second-degree eye cancer induced by stilistic disjunction...it burns, you want to look away but you can't, and there it stings again...

What is wrong with you, the new font is superior in every way. It's soft on the eyes.

Courier, Arial, whatever style, I’m only looking for more blackness/thickness to have a good contrast to read. That font-scaling with possible anti-aliasing does no real good now on that printer paper. I don't have such issues in other games, so maybe it's just my little 24.5" screen here that doesn't run in 4k or something for the game to look nice like before.

Seriously.

The first thing I noticed, honest to god, was not the new character models, not the improved textures, but the new font and just how much easier it is to read.

So... isn't this just a case of swapping out a TTF somewhere?

I personally like the nostalgic typewriter font, hearkening back to the old school IBM 8x8 thick double dot font used for the classic 320x200 display resolution, but really, we still have PCs and this ought to be a font file sitting somewhere, right?

No, I haven't looked; It's not something I'm losing sleep over.

Ya the old one was nice and thick - so its much easier to read with bigger monitors.
The new one is saving screen real estate in a place where it is not needed at all.

Probably, but I'm not hacker enough to crack the code and find where to force the subroutine redirect.

You are not a hacker you are a ranger, shoot at the problem until it works.
That's the ranger way.

I don't mind the font, but the way the text is faded, jesus fucking fuck! It feels like my monitor is smudged. What's next, the typewriter runs completely out of ink, sand blows over the UI and sunglare makes it impossible to see anything on the screen?

Yeah, there's no way you can compare those two and say the new font is easier to read. I think a little more font weight on the new one would go a long way. And it's not like it's a space savings. It takes up maybe a few % less space than the old one.

Of course, having the option to select between the new and old font (and maybe even have a couple more font options?) would be super awesome.

It does save quite a bit of space, it saves around 9 characters per line.
But the real question is why did they change it at all?

I am sure they must have had a logical reason for it - I don't think its because they thought it looked better.
Maybe they thought all the characters were too fat and needed to go on a diet, if they wanted to model for wasteland text.

After all you normally don't see fat characters in the wasteland or hollywood.

They were pretty fast fixing somewhat the camera zoom and angles, but I have my doubts something will be done there with fonts; at least not in a hurry. I can't imagine no one of the internal DC testers hasn't complained about the font. They must have run the game on special hardware.
The two screenshots of mine above there, which are scaled from 1080p to the forum's 460p, should clearly show that you can still barely read the old font's text without punching your nose on the screen, unlike the new one. I'm not one of the console players who play the game on a wall-size TV, but on 1080p on 24.5" screen which works very fine with other games.

I'd like the option to have the old font, or at least darken the new one.
