Hi all,

This forum thread lists common issues and solutions in Torment: Tides of Numenera. It will be updated over time with new information and solutions as it arises!

General Tech Issues
I have crashes/instability/weird game behavior/long load times.
Frst thing, please make sure your verify your game files: ... -QEUH-3335

If your system is overclocked, please remove any overclocks and see if that fixes the issue.

If you are using any software such as RivaTuner, MSI Afterburner, etc., please try disabling them while playing.

When I save the game, no files appear in the Load Game menu.
If you have a very old save file from early access versions of Torment, they may cause the Load Game menu to become unresponsive. To fix this, please delete any of your old save files in this folder:

<your user folder>\AppData\LocalLow\InXile Entertainment\Torment\Saves

Note: It is also possible for Steam Cloud to sync your old save files, meaning that it can re-download them even after you delete them. If you disable Steam Cloud on the game, this should prevent this from happening.

if this continues to occur for you, or if you ge this problem even if you never played the beta/early access version of Torment, please contact us at and send us your save files.

Low framerate/refresh rate with GSync or FreeSync
You may wish to disable these while playing Torment if you have them enabled and experience issues, such as low framerates. We have heard reports of these technologies causing compatibility issues.

Corrupt game settings (reset game options to default)
Clearing the Windows registry of existing/old settings may resolve issues with Torment. Please note that afterwards, you will need to re-configure any custom settings like graphics, key bindings, etc.

- Type "regedit" in your Start search field and press Enter, or go to Run and type in "regedit.exe".
- Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER, then browse to Software/inXile/Torment.
- Delete the entire "Torment" folder.

Torment Won't Start (32-bit)
Torment: Tides of Numenera is a 64-bit application as part of our minimum requirements, and thus requires a 64-bit operating system. Unfortunately, you will need to update your OS to a 64-bit version to play.

Audio Crackling/Stuttering (Realtek)
This is often caused by old audio drivers. You will want to grab the newest Realtek HD Audio drivers and install them:

If that doesn't work, check your Windows sound settings and try changing the bitrate if you have that option (i.e. 48 khz to 44.1 khz).

Gameplay Issues
Peerless/Lazaret Combat Freeze Bug
This is a known issue, but should be addressed in a future update.

Right now, the best way to work around this issue is to save the game between each combat encounter in the Lazaret, and try to avoid killing too many Peerless drones at once in a single turn.

Combat Turn Freezes/Gets Stuck (General)
We are investigating this issue for a future update. We believe these hangs are tied to AI and movement bugs.

Combat Turn Freezes After Using Frost Brooch
There is a specific bug where using Frost Brooch can cause combat to get stuck on the enemies' next turn. This issue should be resolved in a future update.

Stuck at 49% loading bug (Oasis Fathom, Crefton Fathom)
We are investigating this issue for a future update. Please send us your save files to if you experience these problems so that we can take a closer look.

Save file locations are:

Windows: <your user folder>\AppData\LocalLow\InXile Entertainment\Torment\Saves \
macOS: /Users/<UserName>/Library/Application Support/<Torment>/
Linux: ~/.config/unity3d/InXile Entertainment/Torment

Linux Issues
Linux locale issue (stuck at 70% loading)
This is a Unity engine bug caused by trying to play games on Linux with a non-English locale. There is an easy work-around to the issue, however, which requires that you explicitly set the game's locale to 'en_US:UTF-8'.

You can do this by editing the game's launch options in Steam. Right-click Torment in your games Library, go to Properties -> Set launch options, and then add "LANG='en_US.UTF-8' %command%". We are looking at a solution to address this automatically in a later update.

Linux black screen issue
Some users are reporting a black screen issue on startup. We believe this is likely due to missing dependencies on some systems which may not be installing properly. Most likely you need the sdl2 dependency:

Debian/Ubuntu: libsdl2
Arch Linux: sdl2
Fedora/CentOs/Red Hat: libSDL2
