After you defeat Mangar, return to the Adventurer's Guild. You will see the option to jump the party over from BT1 to BT2.

Am I understanding correctly? Characters can't be transferred until they defeat Mangar? Yikes. If that's the case, I guess my party won't be exploring BT2 for quite a long time. And if the same restriction is put on transferring BT2 characters to BT3, my party will most likely NEVER make it to BT3. :(

Load your BT1 saved game and enter the Adventurers Guild. You'll get an option at this point.

Which begs the question, does the game treat a regular torch as a magic item that will cast a MAFL spell? Is torchlight antimagic-persistent?
The notes explicitly state that item-based light ignores anti-magic zones.

No one is stopping you from just firing up BT2, create a brand new party, and start exploring...

I am puzzled: Why is the King's Magician [now] a woman? (But that's not what puzzles)

*Why does the King's magician use a re-worked version of the non-androgynous male portrait from the original game?

Is this a bug/oversight, or strangely deliberate; and if deliberate, why so?
If anything, the updated portrait looks even more masculine than the original.

Image

**Ignoring for the moment that obviously the King's magician was intended (and illustrated) to be a gnarled old man in the original game.

To Krome: This could have been an awesome Bard's Tale 4 BTW. Well worth the money, and I'd have upped my pledge had their been
screenshots of it. [Just imagine a BT4 that remastered the entire series (as seen here), and included itself as the new sequel.]
8-) 8-) 8-)

***Question: Why the modesty moss in the UI? (There is a legacy option for ya. )

I noticed that gender change too; it definitely stood out. I shrugged it off as a mistake, thinking maybe it was a minreading of the portrait. But yeah the original does say him. (and this is absolutely nothing related to hotbutton cultural topic, so hopefully no one makes it into that!)

The UI moss was another thing I was wondering would be accurately reflected in 1/2/3. Only 3 had the truly run-down UI appearance. 1 and 2 were pretty clean.

That picture could easily pass as an old hag or a gnarled old man. I'm just guessing Krome decided that since the picture could pass as female, they'd take advantage of that and add a female character to the story for the sake of varying things up a bit.

Can we get the intro poem text on the screen during the intro animation?

Beyond the Bard's Tale, as was told,
An epic great will now unfold
And in the quest, before your sight,
A mortal man becomes the Knight.

Of wounds this many can never die;
His lips will never, voice the cry
Which doomed another, ages gone
Who now is trapped as evil's pawn.

Of puissant might and matchless brawn
The knight's fierce fate is plainly drawn
Upon the tome of life, in fact
And in this power lies the pact.

So seek the wand, and face the snare
Yet in no way can you prepare
For Zanta's wrath and endless guile -
Now try the quest, friend ... for a while.

This was a woman in the Commodore 64 version... The C64 portrait was of a woman with long hair, which was cool because she would turn her head and point at you.

That explains it—well explains part of it. :)
I didn't have the C64 version; though I've played it (at a friends house)... I didn't encounter the starter dungeon.

***I would buy Bard's Tale 3.5 standalone DLC campaigns done by Krome Studios (or InXile) that used this engine, and/or that kept to this format.
InXile could call such a game(s) as: Bard's Tale Classic: Title.

And still keep BT5 in the present format of BT4....

-- It would be a shame not to use Krome's experience with BT1-3 to not continue the "Classic" series.

Maybe Krome Studios will secretly drop a Bard’s Tale Classic next year!

In version 2.03 BT1 map locations will change, items and equipping will change.

What will happen to BT1 saved games with old maps with explored squares, and equipment? Will they remain inaccurate or be scrubbed through a filter?

Are you sure about that? I really thought the C64 used the druid portrait:

But I can't find a screenshot now, so I'm not 100% certain. If you have a screenshot of the C64 version, could you post it?

Looks like a Druid to me:

The woman turning her head sounds familiar, but it's been so long since I played the originals that I don't remember where she might be.
