Any reason to add or fight them?

Add them to strengthen your party. But it makes more sense when they are high level themselves. If they seem low, I usually dismiss them.

In the original first game you could only have six characters; the seventh (first, actually) slot was for a "Special" party member. Since you couldn't have a seventh player character, getting a good monster to improve your combat performance was important - this is where wandering monsters, magical figurines, and numerous spells had their relevance. And Doppleganger/Mimic monsters.
From BT II onwards, you had the option of taking a seventh proper character along, and the Remaster expands this back to part I.
