I just about jumped out of my skin just now, when I received an email from CrowdOx, turns out it was just the BT4 Beta key. LOL

There's obviously been a problem of some sort, wish they'd just give us an ETA...

I've been more interested in the remaster than the BT4. So needless to say, kind of anxiously awaiting the remaster keys. I sure don't like this new backer crap. In the old one, you could just go see your rewards, and download again or whatever. This new one just has that survey thing.

Yes, I question what was wrong with the original backer site? Probably cost to manage it.

I went ahead and just bought another copy on Gog. I'm going to give it to one of my kids after I get my backer key.

So I can say after playing it for about a half an hour it's pretty interesting. There are some unique changes from the original Bard's Tale 1 that will take some getting used to. A few examples:

1. 7 character slots.
2. Front 4 attack/can be hit instead of front 3
3. Distance in combat (a la later BT games)
4. Ranged weapons
5. Party inventory, instead of individual

I'm thinking about doing the same thing. The kids will be happy about it, but I'm not.

What would be very helpful is a full official list of the features that will be returning in Legacy mode, once it's released.

Consider that with the estimate being winter, there is still a lot of time for further changes due to feedback from this BT1 release to be made, if the community really really wants to see certain mechanics return as an option in Legacy mode.

There are already quite a number planned. So I wouldn't worry too much at this point about things that are different you don't like, that might well get rectified :)

The screenshot showed that Rogues can critically hit too. That will make things sooooo much easier in some places.

When you try to start a game in legacy mode here is what it says is different:

1. Individual inventory
2. Automap disabled
3. Chapter differences (I assume this means features go back to original. Such as no ranged combat in BT1)
4. Buildings Face You
5. Higher XP Requirements
6. Chapter Specific Songs (Again I assume this means different songs available if you are in BT1 vs BT2 vs BT3)
7. Save and Quit Only

You can't play that mode yet, of course. It says 'winter 2018'.

I didn't even think about that! Might make a rogue actually USEFUL in BT1 instead of a throwaway character.

Edit: Yup, my rouge just critically hit when attacking from the shadows. Cool.

The Rogues can do the hide+backstab combo from BT3. They also have a stat for the Identify ability from BT3.
Trap examination and disarming is also different than the originals.

Other changes include:
  • The Magician can cast Quick Fix.
  • You can kick monsters from your party.
  • All the bard spells actually work correctly (or should). Debuff spells now work correctly, in general.
  • Party attack is not allowed, except when caused by a doppleganger or possessed member. This closes a couple of exploits.
  • XP requierments for level progression for mages beyond skill level 13 is different. It's now "safe" to make a Wizard your final class and get the advantage of better armor and a better hit die on level up.
  • An additional Easter Egg in the Mad God's Temple.
  • Some additional map comments in various places, such as the square to the north of the regen zone in Harkyn's Castle.
  • Magic items have charges rather than a chance of failure.

Higher XP requirements? I'm not sure I like that was changed for the remasters. How different is it? I thought a lot of the fun was fighting and really earning those higher levels.

It's lower in the remasters, by half. My understanding is that they wanted to accelerate level progression and reduce time to completion.

Some other changes:
  • There is an actual statue in the Gran Plaz now.
  • There is a cameo appearance of an inXile staff member with a Barrows Deep tie-in in one part of the map, as well.
  • There is a guild leader in the AG.
  • The intro text has a reference to Caith, which is a Barrows Deep reference.
  • The hints from the original manual scattered around town.
I'm probably forgetting some others, will list them as they come to mind. Am working right now, so might have to wait until later.

Those are most of the big ones that I could remember.

And again, Legacy will roll back most of those changes for a true old school experience.

There are cloud saves. Haven't tried playing form multiple PCs though.

I was wondering about that after have a quick look at the game during down time and didn't choose that option. I noticed all the character portraits are basically the same, but with a coat polished. I wonder if there is a option to put females in the roster.
