Can someone who has access tell me how the BT remastered is going?

For all discussion on all the previous Bard's Tale games: the classic 1980s games (Bard's Tale, II: Destiny Knight, & III: Thief of Fate) & the humorous Bard's Tale (2004) spin off.

Can someone who has access tell me how the BT remastered is going?

Post by Crosmando » September 17th, 2017, 5:33 am

I chose not to participate in the BT1-3 remastered beta thingy. Can someone who has access to that sub-forum tell me how it's going, is it likely to be released soon?
Matthias did nothing wrong!

Rebecca Heineman insists that it will be finished, but at the same time the project seems to be very much on the backburner.

My personal impression is that the integration of the three games is much more difficult than it appeared at first, as the "game rules" are different (ranged combat after part 2, same spell has different levels in different games, some spells and items don't carry over at all, different bard songs, "use" order in part 3, canteens, harmonic gems, etc.). Smoothing these things out or over, I imagine, may cause a headache or two in the single OS approach she's taking.

No news on this project currently, as far as i know, it's all about BT2004 and Mage's Tale.

Last news from 2017.06.15. (Notice how that video is "unlisted" and "comments and ratings are disabled", rather curious isn't it?)
The game is getting close to being done, we are back to work on the project and we hope to have it done in a few months. We will be giving some updates and sending them off to InXile for forwarding off to the backers.
We hope to also be putting posts up on our website and our Twitter feed with some screenshots and of course some of you backers who already received a copy of the game will be getting new updates as the game progresses.

Hopefully at least, this project won't be "held hostage", due to some shifty contract agreement, or grudges, between companies, or persons.

Ah yes, BT Remastered. Looks like Bard's Tale is once again held hostile, this time by BurgerBecky. Or is it Brian Fargo's contract again, who knows? Perhaps Michael Cranford? (j/k)

Remastering Bard's Tale is not an easy task, look at how InXile even failed with their BT2004 "remaster". (It has more bugs and worse controls, than the original.)

InXile and Olde Sküül are both ruining their reputation by doing such things, at least in the eyes of me, an old-schooler. If they make a game that sells a million copies, then sweeping a few hundred hardcore fans (backers) under the rug is effortless, the game being good is a different thing.

It looks like they're trying hard to make people forget about the promise of BT remastered. So, chances are, no more word from either InXile or Olde Sküül about this. BT4 will make people just not care anymore and "forget" about it, right?
And omg, I've just realized InXile released BT2004 "remastered", so they can claim they've delivered a BT remastered...

That wasn't a remaster. It was just a bundled emulator.

The bundle in BT04? (I'm at work and they block Steam's store) That's not really a remaster either. It's just the Apple versions with a hidden emulator doing the heavy lifting. That's why there's all that "select your disc drive" nonsense. Calling them a remaster is awfully generous.

My experience with the recent GoG release, was that the emulator doesn't have an accessible speed setting, so the originals were essentially unplayable, and only seemed functional at a cursory glance.

You misunderstand. InXile remastered their own 2004 Bard's Tale game... Just type "Bard's Tale Remastered" in google and you will see there's a product called Bard's Tale Remastered. I was talking about that one.

It has bugs, control issues and speed problems. The the same is true for the bundled emulator as well as the DOS version of the game, bundled with an emulator. Unless the fan patch is applied to the latter (but it is still uglier).

The most obvious and simple way to play BT1-3 is to play the worst versions. Classic BT would have deserved better.

Yes, the Steam version also required several workarounds to be able to save the party.
