A bit of it on Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-mrM-k14amI

I loved Dragon Wars. A lot. It's slightly different characteristically and in some game mechanics, but I enjoyed how the story/lore was separated out into paragraphs to read, which was a sort of DRM - you get the full experience if you have the game (w/the manual) otherwise you have no idea what's going on in the storyworld :) And the maps, levels and areas were much more varied.

I'm intending to have a section of BTO dedicated to DW (maps and whatnot) soon as well. IMO, it was a great followup to experience after playing through BT1-3.

From the link I posted directly after I said it wasn't under copyright:

"the game is no longer under copyright laws"

But I found many other things that would seem to back it up. A copy of the game playable in a browser via archive.org, for example:

https://archive.org/details/msdos_Dragon_Wars_1990

And it's listed on Abandonia as Abandonware

http://www.abandonia.com/en/games/3668/Dragon+Wars.html

I found browser-playable version of the Amiga and PC versions, and multiple download sources for PC, Amiga, C64 and NES versions, on sites one would trust not to offer downloads of copyrighted content.

None of it conclusive, but together it does paint a picture.

Yeah... I would never trust a 3rd party's word on that. The link to the Steam store you gave lists a copyright.
(C) 1990 Interplay Entertainment Corp. "Dragon Wars" is a trademark or registered trademark of Interplay Entertainment Corp. in the US and/or other countries. All rights reserved.
AFAIK, it should remain under copyright for at least 95 years.

**I suppose it is not impossible that Interplay willingly donated Dragon Wars to the Public Domain... but that would surprise me.

And it little bit of an explanation about Abandonware, here.

In short, "Abandonware is illegal. Downloading commercial software for free is a copyright violation and you could, in theory, be sued. You almost certainly won’t be, but that doesn’t change the answer to the question of abandonware’s legality." Basically, abandonware only exists because no one is around or willing to take action against illegal downloads. That doesn't mean copyright no longer applies, or abandonware is therefore legal. It's still illegal. In some cases though, the copyright owner officially releases the property to public domain, and then it's legal. That's the only case, as long as the copyright has not expired.

On a related note, I noticed some months ago that Interplay is selling the rights to a bunch of their old games. InXile could possibly buy DW rights.

I actually bought Dragon Wars on GOG about 2 years ago and am making a lets play on Youtube. I like Bards Tale Better. But it is still a great game!

If anyone is interested I got it here. And when the Improved versions of Bards tale comes out I will make one for that one too.

I just brought it on Steam and so far, not impressed, but I haven't played much. The graphics are lor resolution, the colour is garish pink and white. Is there any way to fix this?

Find the Amiga version and run it emulated. The DOS version has lesser graphics than Amiga.
Look it up and watch on Youtube first to determine if you actually want it.
Gotta put your mind in 80s/90s mode for this one, remember... =P

Yeah, I think I might ask for a refund, because it doesn't look as good as the screenshots shown on the store page.

My version is good, not red colors. Normal VGA colors. I bought it at www.GOG.com

You can see the GOG version here:

I've just been playing. Still can't figure out how to improve my graphics situation, but interesting game for it's own time.

If is is available AND BT IV is a success, they could do this. But while Bards Tale is a reference RPG name at least, many gamers have never heard of DW. So personally I wouldn't throw THAT much money in that gutter.
I loved it back then btw, I think I played it on Amiga.

But yeah, Amiga/Apple seem to be the best quality.

I found the more colourful version or a version with better graphics options on the Abandon Ware Archive and it does look better. I couldn't find the fancy Amiga version. The improve palette of colours just makes the game more bearable to play.

One thing I'm wondering about Dragon Wars is how much it changed after Interplay realized that they couldn't release it as BT4. Based on an interview I saw with Becky, it sounds as if it basically boiled down to a name change and some tweaking of the story. But if that's really all that changed, then BT4 would have been a very different game from BT1-3. I mean, sure, DW has some similarities to the BT games, but the party mechanics are quite different, it uses a skill-based system, only four-party members, and the design of the game world doesn't really feel like part of the BT universe (no labyrinth-like dungeons, for example.) And no bard songs? No guild? No shops, no review boards, etc. It sounds like they didn't have much time to completely overhaul the game, so I guess the original plans for that version of BT4 were to take it in a very new direction, but does anyone have any insight on this?
