Classic Bard's Tale Creature Portraits

Post by ZiN » July 9th, 2015, 4:02 pm

I went around monster-hunting in BT3, that is, trying to take a picture of every single creature in the game. I played the C-64 version, because in my opinion, that has the most stylish portraits. It was fun. It would've been even better if i actually captured their animations as well (because they're mostly very nicely done) but that would've taken too much time.

Anyway here's the result:

Image

I counted 73 unique portraits, if you notice any missing ones, please let me know!

Now there are a few things i'd like to add:

Firstly, you can notice that some of the portraits are in black&white (C-1, I-3, G-4 and I-7 Urmech). I wonder if they're intentionally so, or perhaps they've ran out of time to properly color them? (Some of the animations are quite simple as well, especially toward the endgame.)

Second, which of these creatures were your favourites, that you would like to see them return in BT4?
For me it's:
E-2, the Nefast. It's a quite unique monster i've never seen elsewhere. This guy (at the bottom of the page) also remembers it from fondly from BT3.
F-6, the Tarjan Warrior/Malefic Champ is also decidedly BT-like for me. Even though Tarjan is no more, perhaps some of his minions still exist in the darkest parts of forgotten dungeons. They're extremely tough guys though, so beware!
In addition i also like the B-2 Slayer and the G-6 demon too. D-5 as well, just because i have no idea what a Slathbeast is, but it's quite funny.

I presume these are 1x1 scale.
This would be great to have a crossreference for the BT1 monster catalogue. Mind if I add those images to the list? :)

Yes, 1x1 scale, 88*88 pixels each.
Oh, you did this too, in BT1, with animations to boot! Very nice job! Sure, go ahead and add the pictures, as you like. I'm a bit burnt out for now, but would be nice to do the same for BT2. And for different versions too! :)

Very nice. Superior to the PC version in pretty much every way. The bloodfiend/herb/etc picture is so much nicer than those stupid blobs.

Brilhasti there always gave me the creeps with those pustules. And, wow, I forgot that Sceadu one. The PC version was pretty lame. I wonder, though, if the PC version had more images.

Hm. What's E4?

Having played through it entirely recently, I don't remember encountering E4. Perhaps it's a class/gender choice I missed? Or maybe one of the images corrupted in my copy.

E4 is the high priestess of Tarjan, Lorini. As far as i know, they only appear in the last fights and usually get nuked / critted in the huge fray, before having a chance to show up at front.

I thought that might be the case. It's a more generic portrait in the PC version. I think my video shows her. Kind of a letdown.

Interestingly, the C64 Nazi (I5) has a sorta-kinda swastika on his sleeve. The PC Nazis just look like Duke from GI Joe.

Yeah, I remember her. I actually found that fight to be quite a bit tougher than the actual Tarjan fight, even with the curveball Tarjan throws attacking you immediately after you finish his initial fight

Great job in putting that together. Funny though, as 71 portraits seems like both a lot and not enough at the same time.

How come the pictures in the old BT games vary so much between OSs? Is this due to drastically changing graphic capabilities (colors, mostly)?

Back then it was common to have separate teams make the platform specific versions; this could be the reason, or part of it.

I really loved the monster portraits, crude animation and all -- in fact the monster portraits/animation hold some of the strongest memories.
