Bard´s Tale Classics Remastered on GOG as well?

For all discussion on all the previous Bard's Tale games: the classic 1980s games (Bard's Tale, II: Destiny Knight, & III: Thief of Fate) & the humorous Bard's Tale (2004) spin off.

Bard´s Tale Classics Remastered on GOG as well?

Post by Tarhiel » April 18th, 2018, 7:48 am

Hi folks,

I apologize beforehand, if this was asked beforehand, but I have a two questions:

1.) Will Remastered editions of first three Bard´s Tales be present on GOG as well?
Or are they already included in Bard´s Tale (2004) in a from of upgrade?

2.) As a backer of BT IV eligible for remastered versions of first three Bard´s Tales, would it be possible to redeem them on GOG?

Thanks for answers.

Hi Tarhiel, the BT Trilogy remasters will be given out to backers when they are completed. They are still in devleopment. The version included in the 2004 Bard's Tale (and which you also have access to as a BT4 backer, if you've completed your backer survey) are the emulated original versions.

Thank you for the answer, phimseto.
Do you plan to release them on GOG as well?

I really hope you do :)

I too would prefer it on GOG, as well. After all, it is a good old game.

Unfortunately emulated versions are broken in the Linux version that's currently available on GOG, and while I've heard that recent update to it (on Steam) fixed this, GOG never got it. Did you get any further updates from inside the company if it will ever appear on GOG too? Besides some other bugs that were fixed, playable originals was the major benefit of that missing update.

I've raised the topic, but it's been on the backburner. Lots of irons in the fire right now, but I'm advocating for us to finally get the remastered version live on GOG.

What about the stand-alone DOSBox emulated versions that we used to be able to download but now can't since the move to CrowdOx?

When you fill out crowdox survey, the link to the emulated versions is included in your digital fulfillment email.

An alternative is to play originals bundled with the game using Apple IIgs emulator explicitly. But last time I tried it, it wasn't very playable or may be there was something wrong with the emulator I was using.

ActiveGS works great. I even run under Wine on Linux (emulator inside an emulator).

Technically speaking Wine is not an emulator ;) but yeah... :)

Also count me on the ones wishing to have the remastered on GOG !

Wine doesn't emulate at the instruction level, but it still emulates a Windows environment.

Last time I tried to play the IIGS version on a emulator (KEGS) it ran fine.

Personally I prefer to just fire up the original and play it natively on an Apple IIGS, good thing I have 4 of them.

If I was going to emulate, I'd probably go C64. I mostly wanted a DOS version so I could character edit for... reasons.

Haven't tried VICE on Windows, but it works decently on Linux, if someone wants a C64 emulator. http://vice-emu.sourceforge.net/

Cloanto, the Amiga Forever people, also release C64 forever, but I haven't tried it: https://www.c64forever.com/

Personally, though, I regard the IIgs version and the Mac version as the best ones.

Mini vMac runs on Windows and Linux: http://www.gryphel.com/c/minivmac/. On Linux, I run it with Wine though, due to bugs I've encountered with the native Linux version.

ActiveGS runs on Windows and you can use it on Linux under Wine without difficulty - you can literally invoke it as:

Code: Select all

wine ActiveGS.exe bardstale.activegsxml &
and it will work. http://activegs.freetoolsassociation.com/ (grab the standalone application)

I've also ran it in an Atari emulator and thought it was decent. (Better than the Amiga version.) But, I did have to play around a bit to get the Atari emulator configured properly.

I grew up with the C64, so the Apple color palettes always look wrong to me.

I've used C64 forever, but some games are pretty weird on it. Impossible Mission has an input delay that comes and goes, but is just enough to mess you up when timing is critical. Raid Over Moscow is seemingly unplayable as no key appears to open the hanger door, and I see no keymapping information anywhere. But it might work well for keyboard-exclusive games.

Same here... I loved (and miss) those graphics. The emulated versions only scratched the itch a little. ;)

The art samples from the Kickstarter Q&A look great! :D

Any chance Krome is making the remastered versions iOS/Android compatible? I'd love to have the remastered Bard's Tale trilogy on my iPhone.

Oh man, that would be pretty sweet. I mean, I can run it via BT2004, but that's not the same (and buggy, and has broken images, and...)
