The Bard's Tale Remaster and Bard's Tale IV PLATINUM EDITION

Post by Lord_Stargazer » August 14th, 2018, 12:29 am

Hi!

A couple of days ago I preordered the Bards Tale IV PLATINUM EDITION. Included in the Platinum Edition are the remastered versions of the original Bard's Tale games, the first of which is supposed to come out today. So how does this work? Will I get another Steam key from Xsolla? Or will it magically appear in my Steam library since I entered the beta key? Does anyone know?

Looking at https://bardstale.com/ it mentions that the edition you ordered came with the Emulated Trilogy, this is not the remastered trilogy.

As far as I know, the only package the remastered is included with is the Kickstarter tiers from $20 upwards. Any other method of getting BT4 would then require a separate purchase I guess.

It is surprising that they aren't included tbh given the cost involved in the higher tiers. When I backed the Kickstarter I paid less and got a Wasteland 2 key as well as the remasters. I appreciate there should be better rewards for the early backers but it seems disproportionate to me

Yeah, while my post was in the moderation queue I found this out myself. It's a slight bummer, but since the Remastered Trilogy is only about €15 it's not a big deal.

Hi Mangar, it's only the emulated versions that we're offering up on the pre-order packages.

Eh. While i understand that you guys are disappointed by this, I have to take InXiles side on this one, the Pictures state pretty clearly that it is the emulated versions.

If it is a deal breaker for you maybe ask nicely for a refund instead?

From My Survey from Crowdox:

The Bard's Tale I-III Classic Trilogy Remastered (Digital)
1 Included

An exclusive remastered version of The Bard's Tale I-III. This re-release of the classic series comes with improved compatibility for modern operating systems, new features, and other improvements.

When will I get access to the remaster? I thought it was to be today but havent heard or seen anything yet though I do see it available on STEAM.

While I understand clearly now that there is a difference between emulated and remastered, it is in my opinion very misleading for 2 reasons.

First the remaster is included as a backer Reward for 20 USD an up and when you look at the Homepage at a package of 75 USD it is reasonable to assume it's included.

Second the inxile facebook Page is covered with advertisement for the remaster right now and when you click on the link you conveniently get to the preorder page, where you actually can't buy the remaster??

I still haven't heard from inxile or xsolla on my 4 days old tickets so I handed it over to Paypal for refund. If all goes smooth I just buy them separetely, if not I turn around and walk away cuzzing loudly and never give them a Cent again and that includes poe and other stuff they handle.

I asked nicely twice, but was not worth a Response :/

It isn't misleading, because emulated and remastered are 2 very different things. You made a mistake, but there really isn't anything more Inxile could have done since those two words have very different meanings and it literally does say "emulated" on the pre-order page.

It was not reasonable to assume that the Remastered version would be a part of your pre-order when it literally does not show you that it would be a part of your pre-order, only the emulated versions would. So not a reasonable assumption at all.

I just went through the facebook page, every thing I see related to the Trilogy all link to the GoG or Steam page for the Trilogy.

yep, the ol' bait and switch, but there are ways to rectify that, if you're upset by it

There was no bait and switch.
Emulated has always been and meant different than Remastered. Emulated was provided long ago. Remastered was announced relatively recently.

yeah, the words certainly mean different things. But since I pre-ordered, I would call myself a backer, but perhaps in the vernacular I am not. Since the backers got remastered, and I thought I was a backer, I feel that it was a bamboozle. I know you don't agree, but I am glad to know that there are others that feel the same as I, so I imagine it is a comfort to FunForEvery1 to know that others feel the same as well. As I've said in other posts, I already have the emulated versions, so why would I spend the extra $40 for them? It certainly was an impulse buy to begin with, but the version I impulsively purchased was based on a misunderstanding on my part about what I was getting for the purchase. It all worked out in the end, but I definitely thought I was getting the Krome stuff with my initial purchase. What's better than 'bait and switch'? 'Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain'? 'Caveat emptor'? The remastered versions are the topless waitress at the casino where you're losing money on the emulated versions. How abstract can I make this? Fact is, at least two people thought they were getting one thing and got something else. You call it what you think it is, and we'll call it what we think it is, and I will say that if I had paid better attention a month ago, I wouldn't be here now.

All I can say is, if there's a genuine mistake made, and respect abound all around, then one can only hope for some additional act of good will - but not expect it. Sorry to hear about the mixup; for whatever reason it occurred. At least, as you say, "it all worked out in the end". /:)

I'm with inXile on this one too. The site is clear. If you were in on Kickstarter/Crowd Ox, then I could see your point. But 'pre-order' is just that. You did not back the game. You are not a backer in that sense. You are twisting definitions. But if I missed the Kickstarter/Crowd Ox campaign, honestly, $15 is a deal for 3 games. Remastered no less. And Tales of the Unknown is awesome. They added a couple of new locations in Skara Brae. Well worth it in my opinion.

At least for me it's no deal breaker. I just got a copy of the Remastered Edition at Steam on the 14th. I haven't had the chance to play it properly, but on first glance it looks great.

It IS great. It's the old game with some of the improvements from the later versions (like rogues being improved, uniform xp requirements for the different mage classes and a usable automap/minimap)

There are still some things that seem like they are not fully implemented (like the identify skill on rogues), but overall I am having a blast with it.

edit: the only nitpick I have, is that I used to play the old games on my amiga, and the graphics on that version were with some monster pictures still slightly superior ("Mad dogs" monsters, I remember I was especially impressed with, back in the days on my amiga). But overall the graphics are still more streamlined to be the same style, compared to the amiga version were it seemed to be at odds with itself sometimes where some of the pictures were superior quality and some inferior quality.

I hate to see anyone upset with a mistake. I will make sure our CM works with him/her and we will find a quick resolution.
