Will Michael Cranford be involved in BT4?

Post by Scorpion » January 25th, 2015, 5:44 pm

Just one question: Will Michael Cranford be involved in BT4?

For those who don't him, he worked on the first two with Brian Fargo.

Here is an interview he did with RPG Codex:

It would be a nice stretch goal for Kickstarter!

[1 million] Game comes with a Michael (Hunk) Cranford poster!

[X million] Cranford joins the team

Seriously when I saw his picture as a young teenager, I couldn't believe he was a programmer.
Such a nerd I was.

Erm ... you know he's been out of game design for 25 years, right?

I'm not expecting a leading role, but he could provide some fresh input. Sometimes you need to
think out of the box to innovate.

Were you suggesting bad blood between Fargo and Cranford?

Well, I think everyone can agree that BT4 needs some designers with a different skill set from those on WL2 and Torment, writers aren't very important here - but dungeon and puzzle designers, as well as designers with lots of experience in D&D DM'ing - will be essential.

I'd even say that map design would be the most important part, which is a bit unnerving because WL2 certainly didn't excel in that area.

Doubtful considering him and Fargo had a falling out about royalties back in the 80s.

Eh, if they want fresh input, they should hire some no-name hotshot kids or broke ass indie devs. Or better yet they should do a Kickstarter and take some cues from their backers. :)

I read that interview and wasn't exactly floored by the bursting creativity of the guy. "I guess if I stuck with it I'd be making MMOs for 12 year olds today." :|

Not especially, but Fargo did say that the "hostage situation" described by Heineman actually did happen and they had a falling out over it. Whether that would matter today, don't know don't care, but it's not exactly a great reason to hire somebody.

It would be nice if Cranford and Heineman were brought in to work on BT4. I'm sure everyone is older, more mature now and can work together. But then again, they might pull a George Lucas. So maybe all new people is better.

Of course it was just pure nostalgia to suggest the original team of BT1 to work together again.

It would be cool if the veterans could provide some small input/detail to the game. You know,
like one level or trap being designed by Cranford and one bard song by Lawrence Holland.

I really hope he will. He seems to be a really knowledgeable and good-hearted guy and i have a feeling that his involvement/insight would somehow raise the spirit of the game.
I also very much like the stretch goal idea, please make it happen!
Any comments from him yet?

I doubt Cranford would even want to be involved, except maybe in having his company do the website design... ha! Here's how he spends his time these days.

In the interview in the first post he said he's open to it. Also in another interview form 2011 he said he'd love to work on a BT game. Alas he said words like MMO and 3D in the same paragraph...

Well, maybe Brian and Mike have patched things up personally, but hey, "business is business," and in that interview, Cranford explains in detail how he was very disappointed with the contract he had to sign for Fargo on The Bard's Tale II (and that Fargo was equally disappointed — they both felt they were being treated unfairly). Cranford says that in hindsight, if he had known everything up front, he never would have developed the game for Interplay. He's unequivocal about that, even after all these years.

So from that perspective, okay... on one hand, what kind of business deal would it take to entice Cranford to be a part of this Kickstarter, then? And then on the other hand, what kind of business deal would Fargo even be willing to offer him, considering Cranford hasn't worked in game design/programming for decades?

Setting nostalgia aside and being practical about it, I don't think it's worth spending a lot of energy chasing down the original programmers to be a part of the Kickstarter. (Making an exception perhaps for author Michael Stackpole, who improved the plot/story of the third game a hundredfold over what was in the first two games.)

Yeah, I'd like to see Stackpole on board. I also wouldn't mind seeing Becky Heineman involved. Hell, she's still got all the original code from BT3 at her fingertips. Even just bringing her in for some input during pre-production would be nice.

And, nothing against Cranford, but if I had to pick between the two of them, I wouldn't pick him.

So it's going to be BT4 vs DW2 eh? Maybe they will have a profit sharing option.
