Armor List (Spoilers)

Post by SagaDC » May 26th, 2014, 9:12 am

Still poking around with the XML Editor, while we wait for the next big patch to come along. This time, I tallied up the full list of armor. Much like weapons, there are six tiers of armor, with two types of armor on each tier - one "Heavy" type that provides more protection at the cost of mobility, and one "Light" type with less protection but more mobility.

Costs start off relatively low at $250, but spike to $5000 by the highest tiers. Aside from the Armor Bonus, certain armors also have a Combat Speed Penalty (reduces movement) and a Strength Requirement:

Armor - Tier 1
Bullet Proof Shirt (Light): +2 Armor, 4 Pounds
Goat Hide Armor (Heavy): +3 Armor, -40 Combat Speed, 5 Strength

Armor - Tier 2
Leather Jacket (Light): +3 Armor
Steel Plate Armor (Heavy): +4 Armor, -80 Combat Speed, 6 Strength

Armor - Tier 3
Combat Armor (Heavy): +5 Armor, -40 Combat Speed, 4 Strength
Tactical Vest (Light): +4 Armor

Armor - Tier 4
Kevlar Suit (Heavy): +6 Armor, -40 Combat Speed
Kevlar Vest (Light): +5 Armor

Armor - Tier 5
Mobile Infantry Armor (Light): +7 Armor, -60 Combat Speed, 4 Strength
Power Armor (Heavy): +9 Armor, -100 Combat Speed

Armor - Tier 6
Pseudo-Chitin Armor (Heavy): +10 Armor, -60 Combat Speed, 7 Strength
Spectrum Assault Vest (Light): +7 Armor

Interesting. I hope these soon appear on the character screen and on map when worn.

I don't think the intention is to ever have armor physically appear on characters, at least not at this point, since it would undermine the whole Clothing system. Although I certainly wouldn't mind if there was some kind of Armor/Clothing toggle, for people who would rather have their character's appearance be based on armor instead of their three clothing slots. Depending on the type of armor, you could theoretically even mix-and-match, with a hat-slot clothing item and some of the smaller armor suits.

Power Armor was the ultimate armor and better than the pseudo chitin (sp?) in Wasteland. Its not here for some reason, please fix this or design something even better that is new.

WW out.

Yeah, that definitely caught my attention when I was poking through the list - doubly so, because it's actually in the early tiers, meaning those are both items that the player can find in the current version of the Beta. It's hard to imagine exactly why they might have swapped the two around from there positions in the original game, but since the "bullet proof shirt" is never really defined it's hard to say what the rationale might be.

The only thing I can imagine is that they might consider the Leather Jacket to be more protective (now) because it provides more body coverage, as opposed to the shirt which might only consist of a vest-like coverage and/or partial sleeves? But of course, that's entirely speculation on my part.

I'd probably agree with this assessment. The Power Armor could certainly be redesigned a bit, stat-wise, to make it the "Heavy Armor" option for Tier 6 (ie, maximum protection but at a steep mobility cost) with the Pseudo-Chitin armor being bumped down to Tier 5 (with a few tweaks to better differentiate it from the Mobile Infantry Armor).

In the Devs' defense, though, all of the upper Tiers (4-6) technically aren't implemented yet, so these numbers and Tier-rankings are all subject to change. They could very well completely rearrange or rethink them, before the game goes live.

Kevlar + ceramic plates or just kevlar cloth - soft body armor

Am I the only one who never goes for the Armor with penalties? I just can't bear to give my guys something that will lower AP, even if the armor benefit is really good.

Well, it doesn't lower AP, just the distance you move per action point. That's a big deal for characters who need to be highly mobile, such as melee fighters, but when it comes to relatively immobile fighters such as snipers or heavy weapons guys I tend to load them up with the heaviest armor they can wear.

But then again, honestly, unless someone is running a mule or a melee fighter, their strength isn't going to be high enough to wear MOST of the armors with Strength Requirements. My heavy weapons guy tends to have a Strength of 5 or 6, just so he can carry his gun and a backpack full of explosives, but its rare for any of my other Rangers (except for my melee guy, of course, who only wears armor with a penalty if its a relatively low penalty) to have a Strength above 4. That almost immediately rules out armors like Goat Hide or Steel Plate for any of my rangers.

I think by the end of the current beta, I had all of my rangers kitted out in Tier 3 armor. I had Combat Armor (-40 Combat Speed, +6 Armor) on both of my melee fighters and my heavy, and I had tactical vests (+4 Armor) on pretty much everyone else (two snipers, a rifleman, and my doctor).

Well yeah, but still, even with ranged experts like Snipers I always make them use their remaining movement points to retreat after making a shot, which is pretty important especially when fighting enemies like Slicer Dicers to keep out of their range.

Heh. My current sniper has a strength of 1. I would totally put them in some big, bulky monstrosity, but no way in hell am I going to meet that strength requirement.

I tried the whole STR 1 approach once, it didn't work out, I just didn't have enough carry size for loot even sharing it around characters, also it only takes a few stray shots to take down a 1 Strength ranger, even with armor. It's possible of course, I just found it annoying.

Eh, after they slashed the carry weights, I found it hard to justify ever putting less than 3 points into Strength. I'm a pack rat, and tend to loot everything possible - but I don't have the patience to go running back to a vendor every five minutes (especially not in Wasteland 2, where the vendors are literally miles apart). So, strength tends to be a moderate priority for me, or at the very least "not a dump stat". :)

But, like I said, it generally hovers between 4-6 on my characters - even my melee specialists. I like to have characters that are at least relatively well-rounded, now that the majority of the attributes are actually useful.

SagaDC, do you know exactly how many of these armors (and also weapons) are actually in the current beta and usable, and which are just in the code and you found with the XML editor?

The first three tiers for all the Armors are available in the current Beta (Bulletproof Shirt, Goat Hide Armor, Leather Jacket, Steel Plate Armor, Combat Armor, and Tactical Vest), and can be found at vendors and (rarely) in loot stashes or containers. Tier 4-6 are not available.

MOST of the Tier 1-3 Weapons are available in the current beta, with the exception of Energy Weapons and Brawling (both of which are technically supposed to be completely unavailable while they work on them, but you can still find a glitchy Laser Repeater in Darwin Village). Almost all Tier 4-6 weapons are not available in the current beta, and many of them visibly use placeholder values. The exception is the SVD Sniper Rifle (Tier 5) and possibly the AK-97 (Tier 5), which are both reportedly available in the Valley/Temple of Titan (likely as an oversight). I can confirm that the SVD is there, available from one of the merchants, but I have not personally seen the AK-97 drop from any source (although I've seen others report that it has).

Heavy Weapons are a little weird, because they're MOSTLY available from Tier 1-3. The first three Tiers for Heavy Machine Guns are available, as are the Tier 2-3 Rocket Launchers and the Tier 1-3 Grenades (although the grenades aren't actually classified the same way as all the other weapons). There's an RPG-7 available in-game as the Tier 1 Rocket Launcher, but since its also listed as the Tier 4 Rocket Launcher (and still uses placeholder stat values) I'm guessing that it's supposed to actually be a Tier 4 weapon (above the LAW and Sabot Rocket, like in the original game). I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the Mangler (currently Tier 5) will be shuffled down to the Tier 1 slot, since it was weaker than all the other Rocket Launchers in the first game.

All of the special "unique" weapons that I listed in the Weapons thread are implemented in-game. Any other unique weapons are unknowns, because I can't reverse-engineer their XML titles as easily as I could with the "Tiered" gear.

Power Armor should be the heaviest armor, and since it should enhance strength rather than require it....

Uh really?

Am I to understand that we might be wearing armor but it wont change our characters appearance....if so that really blows...cause a waster with a leather jacket missing one sleeve does not look like a Soldier in Power Armor or carapace armor...

Frustration and disgust.

Yep sometimes you want a Ranger that is a badass in a cowboy hat and leather jacket with shades. Other times, you want a Ranger decked out in a massive suit of unstoppable death.
