Updated Our Journal (56): Beta Access for All Backers, About the Release Date

Post by Brother None » June 9th, 2016, 12:52 pm

Huge new Kickstarter update: beta for all backers and word on the release date from Brian Fargo
Torment has also grown to around 1 million words – bigger than the Bible – and we feel that getting a good quality translation of such a deep narrative experience is very important for a large percentage of our players. Therefore, we will be turning to professional localization services to achieve the best experience possible. With the game content complete, we have already begun locking down our text and breaking it into batches for localization, so progress is already being made.

This localization is no small feat (not to mention costly!), but we have a secret weapon… we're partnering with a certain publisher to help out on this front. But who is this partner? We can't comment on that just yet… but you will learn more very soon.

All said and done, our combined iteration and localization efforts are looking to be a 6-month process. So, we have two paths open to us, a bit of choice and consequence, if you will. Those of you who have been following our updates know we have been hinting towards a late 2016 release, and we could crunch and rush to get the game out around November. But doing so would mean both sacrificing the quality of our localization and would lead to a less polished game for the nearly 100,000 people total who have backed the game. Therefore, in the interests of giving everyone the best experience, we will be releasing Torment in early Q1 2017.

We know it's frustrating to wait a little longer, but we've come this far. I remember the pain of moving the release of Baldur's Gate 1 effectively into January in much the same way, but that ended up being the right move and we all know how fondly it is remembered today. These types of trade-offs are never easy, but from day one it's been our goal to make Torment the masterpiece you deserve.

Beta Access for All Backers

We always say it, but we couldn't have got the game this far without all of you. We also know there are many of you who have been waiting to play Torment, and we know from previous experience on Wasteland 2 there's a huge benefit to getting more feedback on the game.

To thank you for sticking with us, we are making Torment's beta version available to everyone who's getting the game with their rewards, right now.

It would avoid disappointment if you'd just say "Beta Access for All Windows Backers" instead of getting me all excited by emails.

That's your concern? I've a thesis to write and still hang on this forum. If would fail to NOT install Torment, I'm doomed. DOOMED!!

I knew this would happen. I shouldn't of had wasted the money on the beta, but I just couldn't control myself. So I'm assuming that all those backers who paid for the Beta lost 25 bucks then? Sure would be nice if you'd consider doing something for all of us who paid for it already. You know a free Poster would be nice. ;)

Well, I did get some really cool wallpapers... So I'll try not to complain.
Anyway, any chance that we go explore more of the game in the version? Any chance of being able to complete the beta 2 version?

I pledged for a 'collector's Edition', but the backer site only propose to redeem a 'Standard Edition' Steam key... is it normal ?

Yes. My concern is that I can't play the game despite being one of 'All Backers'.

Sorry. My condolences.

P.S. Have you considered using a virtual machine software, as option? My friend runs Windows on his Unix or Linux or whatever, when he needs to. Maybe, you could set up something like that on your computer?

For my money (as someone who does not beta, but waits for the final release in anycase) - you guys take as long as you need to get the job done right. I can wait. I'm patient.

(I mean, within reason; by the time you've been working on it for like ten years or something without a release, one might to start to have a quibble...!)

How much of the game is now included in the beta? Can I play the whole story or is it just 30% or simmilar of the game?

Hi. I came a bit late to the party, not hearing aboutT:ToN until the new Bard's Tale was announced, but I made a pledge there that includes T:ToN (so I should qualify as one of "everyone who's getting the game with their rewards"). Yet the torment backer's portal says I have no rewards (and while the bardstale portal lists torment as one of my rewards, it doesn't have the beta). Is this something that will be corrected, or is there somewhere else I should be looking for beta access? Or does "everyone" not include everyone?

You should see it on the Bard's Tale site: https://bardstale.inxile-entertainment. ... te/rewards

Click the "Keys" button on your reward, the layout is a bit different from Torment's web site but you should see it next to the other buttons on the right hand side.

Now it's extremely hard for me to resist the urge to play the beta, but I won't ever touch steam even with a stick, so I hope everyone will help out with finding bugs etc. I'll be waiting for the final release in the meantime, even though it'll still take some time, great news overall.

No worry for the delay, I'd rather have a more polished, well translated game by far.
Also, thanks for letting everybody play the beta! I'll make sure to use this opportunity and give you feedback.

You're not alone on that feeling. I really thought today would be a great day.
To the communication department: follow Wintermute_of_Cof advice next time, especially if the release dates for the non-Windows versions differ.

Well, a very interesting update! Don´t have any problem with the delay, sounds like the game is doing well!

Beta-Access for all Windows+Steam-Users only...

...would be nice to know (given the delay) whether you are shooting for becoming part of GOG InDevelopment, whether supporting other OSes and so on...
