intermittent crashes on zone load (GOG/Linux)

I'm not sure how to find a specific version number, but AFAIK I'm running the latest Linux binary from GOG.

Throughout the game I'd get some crashes like this upon loading a new zone. Mostly I could work around it OK by quick-saving before zoning, but since you can't save in random encounters, at least once I lost one of the "unique" random encounters.

Editing to add: pretty sure this isn't due to ulimit -Sn, which was necessary to get the game to run at all. Once I did that, it mostly worked fine, except for this, which seems unrelated.

Some HW info:

Speculatively: valgrind on a debug built might help pinpoint the trouble...

I forgot to qualify intermittent: I'd guess it happened about one in a dozen times changing zones, but some seemed significantly better or worse than others.
