Director's Cut crashes with AMD video cards? Check here.

Post by sear » October 15th, 2015, 8:31 pm

Hi all, we've received some feedback recently regarding a crash affecting a portion of Director's Cut players on Windows.

The details appear to be:

- Crash occurs frequently during gameplay, especially when using menus like the Inventory.
- Affects video cards from the R9, R7 and 7xxx range (possibly others too).
- Driver version doesn't seem to matter much, we've seen it happen on multiple driver versions going back ~6 months.
- Affects AMD video cards only, not NVIDIA.

The current work-around to get rid of the crash is to switch to DirectX 9 mode. You will lose some image quality and performance, but it should stop these crashes from occurring until we can better pin down exactly what is happening, and whether the problem is on our end, Unity's or in AMD's drivers.

Steam:

1. Go to your Steam Library
2. Find Wasteland 2: Director's Cut and right-click it, then select "Properties"
3. Under the General Tab, click "Set Launch Options" and a dialog box will appear
4. Type in "-force-d3d9" (without the quotes) and click "OK"
5. Close the Properties window

GOG.com:

1. Go to where you installed the game.
2. Find WL2.exe and right-click it, then create a desktop shortcut.
3. Right-click the new shortcut and select "Properties".
4. Inside the "Target" field, add in "-force-d3d9" (without the quotes) at the end, so it looks like, for instance: "C:\Program Files\GOG\Wasteland 2 Director's Cut\WL2.exe" -force-d3d9.
5. Click "OK" and run the game from the shortcut.

Our apologies on the inconvenience here. This issue did not show up in any of our testing prior to release so it's pretty surprising for us to see a bunch of people affected, but we are working on it as quickly as we can. Thanks for your patience!

Update on the Windows AMD DirectX 11 crash: some users report that this is fixed in the newest beta AMD video drivers (ver 15.10). You can download them here and see if these resolve these crashes for you: http://support.amd.com/en-us/download
