WL2 DC crashes on startup (Linux)

Hello everyone.

I have WL2 DC in Steam. I'm trying to launch game from Steam game library. Game crashes during load screen (spinning Ranger star before intro video "inXile").
When I launch directly from console (./WL2 from WL2 DC directory), game launches fine to title screen.

My system configuration:

OS: Gentoo Linux
RAM: 8 Gb
Video: NVIDIA GeForce GTX640 2 Gb

I have the exact same problem. I launch WL2 Director's Cut from Steam and it crashes during the first load screen. The Ranger icon in the top left corner stops spinning and a few seconds later the window closes itself. Only even if I launch it from the console directly from the WL2 steam directory with './WL2' it also crashes the same way.
I am using Archlinux and have all the required dependencies installed. 8GB of Ram, Nvidia 760GTX 2GB.

It sounds like the bundled Steam runtime libraries are conflicting with newer libraries installed on your system. Steam's support target is Ubuntu; it will actually download libraries from Ubuntu 12.04 and try to emulate it while running games (understandably, that can cause all kinds of problems if your distro isn't Debian based).

There's a ticket in Valve's GitHub detailing the issue here:

I'm also on Arch Linux 64bit with a GeForce GTX 680. I'm not having any problems. Check out the information I gave to winterheart above. If that doesn't help, launch the game in a Terminal and post the output here. That should hopefully give us more information to work on.

I think this might be an issue with Unity when you have 2+ monitors on Linux.

Try disabling everything but your primary monitor or use this command line switch when starting the game in a Terminal: "-screen-fullscreen 0". If that works, you can try manually editing your preferences file, it's located here: "~/.config/unity3d/inXile Entertainment/Wasteland 2: Director's Cut/prefs"

Ok, so I've been having this issue as well. Using Linux Mint 17.1 Cinnamon, tried updating graphics drivers (AMD catalyst 15.9) and tonurics suggestions regarding Steam libraries.

Disabling full screen was what worked for me in the end - and trying to re-enable full screen in-game caused it to crash out (I'm only using one monitor). However, the game is still unplayable - I can enter a new game, I am shown the characters but unable to take any actions, and the game still crashes.

I can confirm this behaviour for Xfce as well.

Same issue here... I can see loading screen (spinning star) then goes black and dies.

Disabling fullscreen works; re-enabling it causes game crash.

It's either a Unity or Wasteland bug but one of my other Unity games works fine...

But I don't have 4 monitors, only 1, not sure why it detects like that, maybe it detects i3wm workspaces (but I don't recall if I had 4 opened at the time).

Unfortunately, no luck so far. First I tried creating a prefs file disabling full-screen. The game does start in windowed mode, so that works, but I still get the same crash. This is all in a tiling WM (xmonad) so I tried openbox to see if tiling was somehow at fault, but I get the same result in openbox.
I also tried deleting all those steam bundled libs, no change.

If that works, you can try manually editing your preferences file, it's located here: "~/.config/unity3d/inXile Entertainment/Wasteland 2: Director's Cut/prefs"
No difference, still crashing. And after few retries I NEED to reboot since I won't get the splash screen anymore either, just a crash, with the above mentioned errors.

Also, the number of screens error is not linked to i3wm workspaces and do notice that @kelnoky has the same "client has 4 screens" message in his error log, although I doubt s/he has 4 monitors and uses xmonad or openbox.

Yeah, only 1 monitor here, can't be connected to workspaces since I have 10 in xmonad.

Could you also outline what you did so it would be easier for others to do the same, I'm guessing it was download the mesa source code, edit in that mentioned bit then compiled it and you were set?

I managed to play the game a little with the non-fullscreen setting as I'm sure most of you could, but it's terrible to play like that.

System: Gentoo ~amd64 (64-bit), nvidia GeForce GTX 970 (nvidia-drivers 355.11), pure ALSA system, xbox 360 controller plugged in

I also have DC crashing after initial loading screen, completely deleting the 64-bit steam runtime "fixed" it. Digging a little deeper, in my case, the crash is caused by the steam runtime pulseaudio library causing a crash in WL2's libmono.so (maybe because I do not have pulseaudio on my system?)

Anyway, moving away ~/Steam/ubuntu12_32/steam-runtime/amd64/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libpulse* (adapt the path to your steam install) is my current workaround

Thank you, that fixed it for me. At least now I can play on steam.

Sure. I've built mesa from source code from the master git repository with a private Gentoo live ebuild, but that's probably not a very useful information.
Depending on your distribution you probably can find an "experimental" rpm or deb file to install.

This is a fix for mesa open source drivers, so if you have issues with the Nvidia or Catalyst binary driver, it will not help.

The good news for open source driver users is that the mentioned patch is marked for stable mesa releases, so it will appear in the distribution update packages in the next weeks. I'll try to check the mesa mailing list to assure that it happens.

With this fix I can start and play the game. To be honest I didn't play the DC a lot until now, just a bit around the initial map.

I too can confirm that removing the pulse libraries fixes it for me (I don't have pulse running either).

Now I'm running into the issue where the dialogue box pops up, but General Vargas' dialogue won't start. At least in the one try I gave it.

Also, uff, the Director's Cut eats way more RAM. Right of the bat ingame, it allocated nearly 3GB. I'm not sure my 4GB of RAM will be enough to actually play this game.

I deleted every occurence of the libpulse* libs in my steam root because I also don't have pulseaudio installed, didn't help. Did I do something wrong here? I ran this command:

I am very confused about all of this. We are multiple people experiencing the same crash behaviour, however some are able to play by just switching to windowed mode, others by messing with libs. For yet others the mesa drivers are the source of the problem.

Anyway, I know the dev/support team is very busy, but it just sucks that the game won't even start. :(

I'm having the same problem (crash after load screen, with similar player.log) on my desktop (running Debian Sid with free Radeon drivers). I'm not running pulseaudio on that machine (don't really need it). If I run pulseaudio, it does work.

I also had a problem on the calibration screen : if I don't click on "accept" as soon as the screen appears, it doesn't react to mouse clicks anymore (tried with and without a joystick plugged, and in both windowed and fullscreen mode, same result).

But at least I could start a game with those two workaround, not much time now to fiddle/play more, I'll give more info later on.

Another Debian Sid with the free radeon driver, same symptoms and solution than kilobug: the game crashes if PulseAudio isn’t active, and runs well if it is active.
