Hi!

I tried to edit the savegame file with the pack/unpack program above, but every time I pack the save game file back up, it tells me the new file is too big, and the game won't play it. Any thoughts? In the mean time I have settled for the super loot bag trick, and also, once you get good armor, go somewhere easy, like the mine, and record a macro that follows an entire encounter, and round of combat, try to avoid auto weapons or hitting enter, and then run the macro a whole bunch. Levels your guys up pretty quick. The mine and darwin are two early encounter happy places. Still hoping a new editor gets written for this re-release. Loved this game forever, still have my original 5-1/4 floppy disks of it.

Using 1989 Editor

First: PsychicMonk's recommendation may be the quickest way into the game.

Being careful with the Perception Enhancement Exploit will yield enough Attribute points to pump up the PC's,

and allow the specialists to be special with out being frustratingly vulnerable from a fatally low Luck, Agility, or Dexterity.

Second: Tried wlcharedit.zip on WL1 InXile reissue, and got similar cited error message.

Can run WL1 in DOS on Win XP PC. Be careful with that m…o…u…s…e…..! :o

Can play WL1 in DosBox on Mac OS10.

Can edit either with wlcharedit.zip.

Edited saves work for me in the InXile's reissue, both GOG PC and Mac versions.

When cut and paste, make a habit of replacing GAME1 and GAME2 files. Pair them. Location on map determines save to either.

Miss match will create the disk error message and lock up.

If can play WL1 in DOS or DosBox, can edit with wlcharedit.zip and can game on in InXile's deluxe DOS bubble.

Think I can offer some info about the -

"WLEDIT.EXE" - Wasteland Character Editor, (c) Edward Gosselin III, 1989
Here is the character editor that's been floating around the
web for the popular late eighties computer role-playing
game, Wasteland. No guarantees, folks, you get what you get!
P.S. I think the input has to be in upper case, so hit your
caps lock key before starting it up.

This ONLY works to "edit" characters in a 'game' set-up as C:\WASTELAN (note: no "D") !!! - As the original Wasteland would have been installed / set-up on your computer.

To "make it work", simply create the C:\Wastelan directory and copy all your game files into it ... and "EDIT" them there. When leaving / exiting the "Editor" you'll be asked IF you wish to "SAVE" the changes... answering YES completes any 'changes' made. Finally, copy the "GAME1 & GAME2" files back to the directory you're playing the game from.

I tried this several years ago when 'experimenting' with the Combat Shooting skill (giving that skill to all my characters).

This particular Editor works best on 'Fresh, New' characters (with no prior 'experience') at the Start of a new game !
ANY 'changes' ('edits') done to a character result in a "Promotion" for that character when the next 'promotions' are "Radioed for" !!!... this can be 'compensated for' by reducing their 'CON' & 'MAX' by 4 points (recovered in the 'promotion' and back to normal) !
IF this editor is used on a 'game in progress'... it also goes through the 'gained experience' of the characters 'edited'... repeating any 'promotions' they've earned... resulting in some UNREAL characters if done late in the game !

Like the "warning" says... USE AT YOUR OWN RISK !!! :D

Anyone have any luck getting this editor to work with the Steam version of the Wasteland reissue? I am running Windows 7 x64 and keep getting a "wrong version of window" error. I am assuming this does not like the 64 bit OS. Same error even in Windows 95 or Win XP compatibility mode.

** EDIT I did get it to run in the DOS emulator but it still doesn't like the Steam version as it says it can't find the save files. I know the Steam version has them in the \ROM\DATA sub directory. I tried copying the game directory from the steamapps directory to root C and naming it C:\WASTELAN to no avail.

Would love for someone to throw together a quick and dirty windows version of an editor. I just want to skip the clunky reroll intro.

If you just want to skip the rerolling, I did put together an autoroller, over on the other side of the forum.

It was pretty duct-tape-and-hope, but judging from the discussion here, it might be easier... (Of course, it wont help if you want to seriously boost your party, but if you just want to prevent reroll-RSI...)

Fantastic, thanks!

After playing around a bit I was able to use the game extraction utility and edit the savegame with Notepad++. That seemed to work and now the default starting party is set up with attributes and skills that I need...so no more messing around!

That being said, I am having macro issues...lol!

Does this work for the STEAM version?
Can you explain how you did this? I actually just want to adjust one of my characters..

Thanks in advance

I got a little obsessed this last week and I put together a fully functioning, web-based character editor for the InXile release of Wasteland.

http://wledit.s3-website-us-west-1.amazonaws.com

It can load, edit the character data, and save the modified GAME1 files.

The editor can also generate entirely new GAME1 files for starting a fresh game with a fully customized party.

It runs entirely on the client computer, no data uploaded to a server. Designed on Chrome and tested to work with FireFox and IE, as well.

Since it doesn't need to interact with a server to get the job done, you can just download a zip of the code and run it offline, if you'd like. Or just to have a convenient package so you can poke around in the code.

Thank you for this! Something happened to my Fusion Cell item and it went missing so the game was not beatable without this editor.
