Another Radio Tower

Post by Reece » May 18th, 2013, 7:06 pm

Here is my take on the Radio Tower which I modelled this weekend. This is a high-poly model which I would create a low-poly version from.

My thinking on this is that these types of towers are built very well and would still be in reasonable shape except for some rust and dirt/grunge. The wooden platform on the first level is more ad-hoc including the makeshift lean-to structure protecting the scavenged radio switching and control equipment.

The idea is to provide some contrast between the original well built structure and the ad-hoc additions. This contrast is shown through the use of materials i.e. wood/canvas vs metal and sturdiness i.e. between the ad-hoc additions and the original tower.

For texturing the focus would be on rust/grunge of the structure, antenna and weathered look for the wooden platform.

I'm not sure if I have gone a bit overboard with the radio antenna?

Here are some renders of the high-poly version:

Your feedback would be much appreciated.

Nice, but needs more rust and signs of being broken and repaired over and over again imo. 8-)

Thanks for the positive comments. :D

When I do the texturing it will have rust and grunge added. I will give more thought to what kind of damage would be believable.

More to come... :)

How tall is this tower? Most free standing towers are 100-200 feet tall.

You have a lot of antennas, the circular ones are directional and made for tower-to-tower communication, they are usually metal with a plastic/fiberglass cover, I'm not sure how long those covers would last after a 100 years.

The straight antennas that are set out near the top are usually cell-phone frequencies, and the straight ones at the top are tv,radio,cb.

I think most people forget that this supposedly takes place in the SW, which is very hot and dry, so rust isn't as prevalent as you'd think.

Also, they're presumably designed to resist rust.

I appreciate the great input from everyone.

I did some image searches and found a couple of images of some old worn microwave antenna i.e. missing and damaged covers. I think I can use them as reference for this model.

The tower is currently 16m (52ft) tall. I don't really want to make it as tall as it should be as an artistic choice. I am also conscious of the top down camera height and trying to work best for that.

I hope to post an update in the next few days. During the week I only get to work on it in the evenings.

Cheers

Here is an update of my Radio Tower.

The changes include providing two damaged variations of the microwave antenna as well as added high-poly detail. Improved shape of the dome antenna and some minor changes to the lean-to.

I don't think this model will need much normal mapping as there is already a lot of visual detail in the structure. Perhaps the spec map would provide enough visual variation in addition to the colour map. I'd be interested in your thoughts on this.

The current tower and platform structure is currently approx. 2000 tris so I think I am okay for what I will need for the level of detail required for the rest of the objects :D

Hi,

I spent this last week finishing the modelling and working on the textures for the Radio Tower.

The tri count is at 7998.

In addition to the colour map I have created a normal, spec and alpha maps. The maps are created at 2048x2048 and scaled down to 1024x1024.

Here are a couple of screen grabs from the unity interface:
