phpBB Updated: New features, theme broken

Post by sear » April 30th, 2015, 6:32 pm

This is just a notice to not panic. ;)

We updated to phpBB 3.1. This is a major update that brings some really nice new features, including notifications. However, unfortunately it also broke our theme and we can't reuse it as-is. We'll be working on an updated theme very soon, but for a little while we'll be using the default.

A full list of new features can be found here, but a sampling below:
Notification System
Easily configure how you prefer to be notified about various events, such as when you are quoted in a post. The new extensible notifications feature lives in the header of every page and provides a centralized place to receive alerts and other information.

Gravatar Support
Avatars may now be fetched from the Gravatar service, in addition to the previously available options.

Improved Global Announcements
Global announcements are now tied to a specific forum, greatly simplifying permissions.

Unmatched Security
Nothing is more important than keeping your data safe, and our record speaks for itself. In the past four years, there have been no reported vulnerabilities in the phpBB software. Meanwhile SMF, vBulletin, IPB, and MyBB have had an average of 10, and as many as 16. That's an average of 10 more reasons to choose phpBB. And just to make sure, we hired a professional security company to audit the entire phpBB 3.1 codebase.

I guess I don't have to create a "so what happened to the theme" thread? :)

Thanks for the update.

There are a lot of little things we are still discovering. Quick replies was one of them we switched on as soon as we saw it. ;)

Nice! Hopefully it makes it easier to moderate too.

2004 called, they want their forum back.
In the meantime, my face is melting from looking at this.

I'm enjoying the reaction posts in this thread... The longer we wait on replacing the theme, the funnier it becomes.

Even better - grab the ugliest theme you can find on some phpBB theme gallery and announce it as your "real" one. Then when everyone freaks out, replace it with the REAL real one.

Also, er...make sure no one reads this post so they don't know your plan. :)

I'd love to see the site stats since the theme changed... I wonder if it has caused a massive drop in viewership?

Some unsolicited feedback on the site:

Not sure if it's just me, but I'm finding it difficult to know if a thread has unread posts. The way all thread titles currently show in bold makes it appear that all threads have unread posts. Would be nice if read posts had an non-bolded title, so I didn't have to look at dates/times.

Also, when checking the forums on my iPhone I don't see the last time a forum was posted in unless I specifically open that forum. It's nice when you can look at the forum index and see if there are any recent posts in a particular forum/sub forum, just as you can on the non-mobile version of the site.

Progress has been made and your eyes should at least no longer be bleeding. :)

We're still working on it, will need new icons and buttons, but give us your feedback if you have any.

More feedback: links still take you away from this website rather than opening in a separate tab.

Is this intentional? It feels very 2003.

I actually like that, I hate when web site open new tabs automatically. If I wanted a new tab I would have told it to open that way.

It's easy enough, that's true. I simply usually forget to do so, since pretty much every other website I frequent seems to be using tabs.
