Still no news on engine evaluations by Fargo and Friends but this is an interesting offer.

Interesting. Oil Rush wasn't the best of games from the looks of it, but it does run great and look beautiful.

Very interested in knowing if it'll be a candidate. Of course, inXile doesn't have to be cheap about the engine if they have a better candidate, but if it fits the needs, it's a nice way to open up more budget for design and graphics work.

From what I have gathered, I doubt that they are looking for a full 3D engine.

We don't know that for sure. From what i've seen, the engine looks damn good and it supports both mac and linux.

They are. What makes you think otherwise?

I'm not even sure what you mean. What's the alternative to a "full 3D engine", what does "full 3D" even mean?

I think he might be associating 3D with FPS, which--sad to say--is still quite a common misconception. Van Buren had this problem when they first announced they would be using a 3D engine.

Unigine is a very good engine that supports Linux and MacOS.

Most other engines like Unity, Source and UDK are out of the question because they refuse to support Linux.
So we don't have much choice on this subject (unless they decide to go with open source/free engine like Ogre3D or Crystal Space which are not bad at all).

inXile and Unigine are talking about the details of support, engine, source code access, the like. It's not the only candidate, but it's one of the two remaining ones, so it might well be the engine WL2 ends up using.

Very smart of them to be so forthcoming, W2 would really raise their stock.

It'd be a godsend. If it fits, that is.

after seeing the oil rush videos i must say i am very impressed. It showed a zoomed out view and zoomed in and even had an rotating iso view. Never heard of this company or engine before but if it could support a much bigger map that what i saw im gonna be so hyped.

What is the other alternative to the unigine then? I am curious.

Don't know, but Fargo mentioned back in the second NMA Wasteland 2 interview that there were two remaining candidates, and he's confirmed with me that Unigine is one of them.

If the thinking is 3D graphics instead of 2D graphics (either is a good choice in my opinion, I'd be happy either way) then I'd recommend giving this offer serious thought. UniGine is a heavy hitter quality wise but does scale down pretty well. Oil Rush, their own game that uses the engine needs a 2GHz CPU, 1GB of memory and an 8600 minimum. Not bad at all.

Wouldn't hurt Wasteland at all to have a heavy hitting engine behind it. While we are all getting it for the story and gameplay, nice visuals are always a plus and will help it sell after release.

Can't beat the price either :D.

If the dev tools for it are reasonable, I'd say do it.

Looking at the requirements for Oil Rush, it looks a little less demanding that Fallout 3/New Vegas in the processor department, though the lowest supported GPU is a little bit more, though the Intel 3000 series IS somehow included. I have no idea what lower end laptops pack in the CPU department these days, but this almost sounds like a recipe for putting Wasteland 2 into the hands of anybody who owns a PC that was current within in the last 5 years and it would at least be playable.

My guess is that Wasteland 2's combat (and any other graphic intensive tasks), the parts that would somehow not be turn based, wouldn't need to be nearly as fast (paced) as those demonstrated in Oil Rush. What little I know about graphics makes me think that not having so much water effects to deal with on such a scale would make things a little easier.

Also, just because the Onyx engine is out of the running, doesn't mean that the "development tools" being contributed by Obsidian will have nothing to do with the selection/development of an engine.

Please correct me where I'm wrong, I won't pretend to be an authority on the subject and am eager to know more.
