Update 64: A Special Offer for InXile Backers, Wasteland 2 Name Change and a Video of the New Version

Post by Brother None » June 23rd, 2015, 6:40 am

Kickstarter update! This one has a brand new trailer for Wasteland 2 Director's Cut, an exciting offer for returning backers to The Bard's Tale IV, info on Perks, and much more!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hNbEYHzheP0
When we first announced this updated version of Wasteland 2, we hinted at a number of new features. One of those was Quirks, our personality-defining characteristics you pick when you start the game and which have both positive and negative aspects, but we haven't spoken about Perks in detail yet – the other side of the new character customization depth we've been cooking up.

Perks, unlike Quirks, are gained as you level up your characters. As you progress in the game you will earn Perk Points, which you can spend on Perks whenever you wish. Perks are per-character bonus you pick, and unlike Quirks, they are always positive stat and gameplay adjustments. Right now, we have it set up so that you gain a new Perk Point every 3 levels, though we're currently playing through the game balancing things out, so the rate you earn Perk Points may change by final release. Perks also have Skill requirements to unlock – for instance, you might need 3 in Toaster Repair, or 7 in Assault Rifles, with more useful or powerful Perks typically at higher Skill requirements.

This also gives us a great opportunity for us to give players more incentive to pick certain Skills, since now you might need to think about which Skills to get based on the Perks they unlock. Some Perks are a bit more universal in how they work. For instance, you might get a bigger Evasion bonus from hiding behind cover, but with others, you will get gameplay-altering features that will change how you approach combat or exploration, such as unlocking the ability to deal more damage when attacking from behind.

screenshot and trailer shows "console" UI or some kind of "unified" one?

Because if it's "unified" then it doesnt look very convenient to use on PC, too many toggling between tabs.

And still no info on restored content :<

smartass huh? I know that screenshots/video are from console version, I'm asking how different they will be because we know nothing about it, even if we ask.

Its obvious that on PC we wont see that circle-menu or gloving shovel during exploration, but I'm not so sure about ranger creation menu for example.

release) I think brian fargo said they want to release it before F4.. they trying to get it out august or so..

ui) as far as i remember, they said they basically keep the old mouse/keyboard ui, but some things they probably update, if it works/looks better. I think they also said they do this to have 2 ui´s which arent - design wise - completly different.

The perks system and the perks look really interessting.. :D

That's the console one. For production purposes (because consoles have longer lead times) we have to polish up console work first, and the PC UI is not in a finished state to show off. Conceptually what we're aiming for with the PC UI is to have it function the same as the current mouse and keyboard one but with upgrades to allow for new gameplay features as well as graphical polish.

Thanks for reiterating that the console interface will be optional on PC! There has been some hubbub about that. :)

EDIT: Wow! Over 80 Perks! That's great to hear!

Was there any mention on how saves from the vanilla WL2 are going to be managed? I'd hate to lose my previous saved games.

It has been confirmed by at least one Dev that save games will NOT be compatible from the normal version to the Director's Cut version. The DC will have numerous changes to the core mechanics, which prevent the saves from being carried over.

BUT they are toying with the Director's Cut version being a separate entity in your Steam library. So the "original" Wasteland 2 wouldn't be overwritten and you could still play your old games - just without all the new content. Personally, I put quite a few hours into my first game, but I'm starting over with the same party :)

I hope they don't, their should be just one definitive version, not an "old" and "new" version. Not to mention that it over-complicates modding having two versions of the same game.

Great! That was actually what I wanted to know, I'll definitely play the DC but it's good to know that the older saves won't be 100% lost.

Well, I’m quite sure the modding scene will essentially turn to the Unity 5 version (Director’s Cut).
Some modders might do extra effort to support the Unity 4 version too with future mod releases, but I honestly doubt it will be the norm. From what I’ve read Unity 5 is much more modder-friendly than Unity 4.

Well, the main point I'd make is that it's a contradiction to claim that they're making the absolute definitive "one ring to rule them all" version of Wasteland 2, and then keep supporting the outdated Unity 4 version.

They won't "keep supporting it", there will no more patches to the Unity 4 version. But they'll leave it around for those who want to play the "original version", especially because of save game incompatibility (you won't be able to load a save game from Unity 4 version into Unity 5 version) so people who started a game in Unity 4 can finish it.

It doesn't work like that. If you still get the "old" Unity 4 version when you buy WL2 then, they they will HAVE TO support it - because they're selling it, which means updating it if bugs persist in the old version or updating it for compatibility for new version of Windows and video drivers, etc.

They haven't tried to respect save-game compatibility before, even after the game was released, so I don't see why they would.

Considering that the minimum system requirements possibly will increase for the Unity 5 version (dubious link, could be virus porn), then I'm not entirely sure how cool it would be to just replace the (possibly less demanding) Unity 4 version. :?
