Ready Player One's Scorpitron?

Post by Lucius » April 3rd, 2018, 6:18 pm

Ok, inXile posted this on FB, apparently Ready Player One has a mechanical scorpion in it, that looks identical to the scorpitron we all know and love. I'm really surprised there isn't a post here on this already.

The scorpion itself could either be a reference to the Scorpitron from the game Wasteland, the scorpion from the game Centipede, one of the Zoids toys by Tomy, or the guard scorpion from Final Fantasy VII. -Per some website I found dissecting the trailer. I can imagine there are other things it could be referencing as well. I am suuuuper curious if it is in fact a reference to Wasteland. I do not recall a scorpion, or a WL reference in the book. There are Centipede references but that scorpion design, I wouldn't have though "Centipede" when seeing it. Though maybe I don't know enough about Centipede to think armed mechanical scorpion from the 8 pixels that would have indicated the scorpion enemies in Centipede.

Brian Fargo, you are the one who can get me the answer to this! Use your connections and sate my curiosity!

... Well I'd like to say that they copied mine—but mine was done straight from the WL2 concept art, shortly after it was released.

This might actually get me to watch this movie. Emphasis on "might".

It's the same deal as with Roger Rabbit; negotiating for toons, only this time it's for all manner of iconic IP cameos.

Seems rather incredible though that anyone in Spielberg's crew would notice the Wasteland series. Are we sure there are no gigantic robot scorpions elsewhere ?

There is also Scorponok; the G1 transformer; also seen in the second Transformers movie.

Also the scorpions in the 2010 Clash of the Titans remake.

I have not yet gone to see the film but it does not appeal to me at all, yet I have never seen online that positive reviews, beyond all that has been blessed
I'm curious to go see, but I feel the coming thread, I feel that I will like it. I hate everything that is wink / references / easter egg in a movie (at the limit when it's quiet it's fine, but when it's windy and every 2 minutes no what)

I did enjoy it, and the book it's based on too (the movie keeps the main themes, but the plot unfolds quiet differently from the book, so I recommend reading the book to all those who enjoyed the movie).

Well, I can understand not liking easter eggs when they break immersion/are unrelated to the core topic, but "Ready Player One" is in huge parts _about_ easter eggs. They are not immersion-breakers are at all in that context.
