If I understand your post, you're asking whether or not owning the base game on Steam precludes you from owning the Director's Cut version, in which case the answer is a resounding NO. Steam treats them as separate games. If you activate your WL2 key and want to buy the Director's Cut later, you will be able to do that.

Here's how they're listed in my Steam library:


As far as I'm aware, unless the "Director's Cut" is pushed out as an actual patch/update to a game, then Steam will treat it as a separate release. Sometimes developers will pull the original release version of games from the Steam store upon the release of a director's cut, but if you already own the games then you can still download and play it. It's entirely possible to still acquire and download games that have been removed from the Steam store provided you have a cd-key to activate. For example, I was able to acquire the original Deus Ex Human Revolution after it had been pulled from the Steam store because I had a cd-key for it still.
