What is your favorite area of the game?

Post by Brother None » October 3rd, 2014, 3:35 pm

Hey guys,

We'd love to hear which map/area was your favorite in the game, from either AZ or LA. Story-wise, gameplay-wise, because of the details or the people in it, we'd love to hear which one and why.

Put this in the story forum because of spoilers but if your answer is mostly about gameplay that's fine. Let us know!

Canyon of Titan by far. Not only favorite area in Wasteland but one of my favorite areas in gaming . Everything there just clicks. Plenty of place to explore. Sub-quests are fun. A lot of comedy moments. The main factions shaking down the Canyon are original and creative. Some of the decisions I had to make were quite a mind-bender, and the eventual consequences were clever and unpredictable. I've decided to give the nuke to the monks with the reasoning that if they worship it, they're best suited to have it because they'll never use it. Oh how wrong I was.

From the gameplay perspective trying to deal with suicidal monks in combat was also quite entertaining.

The whole place has amazing replay value as well. I've spent couple of days just trying to figure out what all different outcomes are, and then I found out on forums I haven't explored all the possibilities nearly enough.

Overall amazing job on that location. It was so good you should have put it in LA to end the game on a high, heh.
Two rite whiff care is quite a feet of witch won should be proud.

I am going to be unexpected and say Hollywood. (Some spoilers follow)

But not the Hollywood in the game, but the one I imagine it's suppose to be, without the bugs. I really enjoy the location as it looks and feels like Hollywood, but ruined. The location is interesting with the talent agency taking has-nots and trading them off as slaves. On top of that, I really enjoy the concept of God's Militia. I can see certain Evangelical sects becoming the God's Militia if there ever was a Post-apoc in the real world. It's kinda of nutty but not far fetched and feels grounded in reality, unlike the Mannerites which would never happen.

Also the place has a lot of reactivity and a few different possible endings. I just feel the place is ripe with choices and different paths. Now if only it worked correctly, I bet it'd be brilliant.

*Rodia and Canyon of Titan would be runner ups so far.

I'm going to go with Rodia.

Hollywood could be great when all the bugs are ironed out.
The biggest failure in the recent past is this assumption that the audience is not smart.Too much effort is being spent making it dummy proof..all the clues are being held right in front of their nose. The exploration and journey is the reward

I'd have to say the Ag Center. It struck me as being the most fully developed and polished area of the game.
Had all the other areas measured up to the same standard I think the game would now be in the discussion for the greatest CRPGs of all time.

Oh, and special mention to Damonta which had fantastic atmosphere. (The rain added to it perfectly)

havent finished the game yet (waiting for hollywood to be fixed before i go there) but i have to say i like rodia and angel oracle better than any of the places in AZ from a story standpoint. Damonta is my favorite from a gameplay stndpoint. I want to like Rail Nomad Camp but the place is far to large in my opinion.

Canyon of Titan would have been cool if it wasnt for the fact I became auto enemies with the DBM. One of the first NPCs I encountered was a DBM asking me to infiltrate the Monks which I thought was what I wanted to do. Later in the canyon I have to get a Monk follower to continue through and later when I see some DBM guys on a sniper hill they want to automatically fight me, locking me into siding with the Monks when I hadnt even got to the DBM base yet to talk to them about working for them. That really ruined it for me.

Also I feel lime I missed a lot at the Temple. I couldnt go underground to see their place (the overworld is small). Maybe I didnt miss a lot but after going through the Canyon I was expecting some exciting stuff at the Temple but basically as soon as I got there they asked me to go straight to Silo 7. Because of the DBM hostility and the unopeness of the Monks I decided to deactivate the nuke at Silo 7 to spite them both.

Actually the first time around, I killed some DBM spies on purpose, with the help of my monk. Still was able to enter DBM hideout (the Repair Depot), with lots of hissing and grunting about fallen comrades. It's the militiamen in the field who become hostile - and they aren't really friendly as it is - just order you to scram, and open fire in a few seconds. The first DBM guy even clarifies that his brethren don't know about your special status and will shoot on sight.

I actually really don't like any of the Canyon of Titan story paths. Getting the sludge in particular is a major fucking chore imo. Killing everyone is pretty fun though. :P

My favorite area though... hmm. I think it's a tossup between Highpool (if you choose to save it) and maybe Damonta or the early LA areas. Damonta through Rodia was pretty damn good.

So far I loved the canyon of Titan (because the followers of the mushroom cloud ROCK!)... but I was quite disappointed in ther base. I expected something really special and cool looking... but it looks and feels empty and lame.

Canyon of Titan and Rodia from the writing. Hollywood has huge potential but is just too buggy and thus annoying currently. DBM HQ was the best combat experience b/c its perhaps the biggest challenge.

I want to say Hollywood (the whole buildup, the map visuals, the factions like God's Militia, etc), but right now Rodia just feels better, gameplay-wise. Also I liked the Canyon of Titan location, except for the map and it's tunnel-y buildup. I mean, it isn't bad, but it feels somewhat railroaded to me. After all, you always only move forward and then reach your target.

From the quests, I think Rail Nomads is most liked by me. It's the location I probably could replay the most.

Other than that, IMO the visual quality of the maps is *a lot* better in Los Angeles. They are smaller and remind me more of the original Fallout (Rodia, Angel Oracle, etc.). They only show the towns, not the area around the towns, which naturally makes them feel better structured and less like a long dungeon with "pockets" of content to the left and right.

Additionally: I absolutely hate that every map apparently needed to be "locked up" from all sides with junk and hills and old cars and 90° flipped highroads, etc. This feels very unnatural to me. Especially Arizona suffers a lot from it, and especially the encounter maps, that surely are the visually worst maps in the whole game. Other games simply but up a black / fade border on the edges, why Wasteland 2 has to create unnatural looking borders?

/My 2 cents.

Hrmm.

Favorite map: Hollywood.
+Large relatively open map that looks like humans live there, with multiple shops
+Neutral to the player which means I can dialog without combat.
+Multiple ways to approach problems and not being forced into one direction is it's main draw.
-Would be great if it was less buggy, the intent is there but it's almost destroyed by bugs.

Runner up: Rodia
+Looks like a post apocalyptic farming community, with all the required buildings.
+not a tunnel like some maps
+Conditionally neutral NPCs
-No trader in town? That was weird.
-Smaller than Hollywood but that's to be expected.
-BUGGY

After that: Ag Center
I liked Ag Center, yeah it's a bug hunt, as in it's full of giant bugs, but I could go left or right or straight ahead, I could save everyone or just rush ahead. Planning on playing the game again specifically so I can test to see what happens if I use the Ag Cure on a pod person. The whole bug hunt is a negative though.

Rail Nomads; I liked the story behind this one and how difficult it is to make peace. But I didn't like the layout which was one long snaking corridor. I saw a screenshot of an early build of Rail Nomad, kickstarter era I think, which was much more open.

Titan Canyon; I like that it has multiple solutions but the place doesn't look much like a canyon. Narrow corridors are a negative and the bases of both the Monks and DBM don't make sense. For the Monks it has a bunch of empty hallways with no place for them to sleep or eat. For the DBM it's just one big room, again with no place for them to sleep or eat. Still, being able to approach the problems different ways saves it from being the worst.

Damonta; memorable NPCs and map looked like it had been lived in by people, at least for a while. Rain was a nice touch. For a town renown for it's salvage, I didn't find much. Still, it was ok.

Darwin? Barely remember it beyond a boring corridor filled with zombies. So much wasted potential; more sad than bad.

Hated The Prison for many reasons, while map itself is ok, but NPCs in it and the quests it has is just too obnoxious. And can't even ignore it because the player is railroaded into it. NPC hiding behind invulnerable turrets while he taunts you over an intercom gave me Little Lamplight flashbacks. HATE THIS PLACE.

So far Rail Nomad for the quests and different resolutions. I don't particularly like the map design itself though.

The California areas all have potential to be better but the janky scripting holds them back.

Rodia does have a trader. He's easy to miss but by the front gate.

Yeah. That's why I said "in town". You'd think they'd have a general store or something. Tacking on a merchant at every map entrance felt lazy.

I quite like Damonta, Hollywood comes close second, but it could potentially be the best map of the game, when it is fully fixed and if there would be some minor addons to it, like proper Casino.

Runner ups: Rodia and Valley of the Titan.

As a bonus, worst maps: Santa Fe Springs, as it is just boring and AG Center, as it is just way too large map for the the game for that point of time and is filled with tedious enemies. Highpool trumps over it on design as well.

I hate the prison area for its -plot progression- ... but the level design of it is great. If it was possible to bust into the prison, I think it'd be very interesting. The fact that you can't bust into it when you encounter it I think spoils a lot of people on it... but if you look at it, there are many ways to sneak to the 'prison' itself, multiple paths and different tactical possibilities. I think that is good level design. Its just the turrets that present the major problem.

After that, I think the one I enjoyed most was Damonta, because it wasn't very combat heavy. I didn't like the searching around for everything, but I thought it was a neat concept.

The Canyon of Titan I can't judge fairly because of the shader bugs. I think the writing was interesting, but the shader bugs keep me from making a fair review at this time, I had to basically run through the area as my machine got slower the longer I was at it, and even loading out of it was 50/50 for a crash. Never had any other slowdowns or crashes in the game.

I think I still have half of the game to go through. I'm just about to leave Arizona, and I'm trying to make sure everything here is complete first. I'll probably have better feedback once I'm through it - this is a huge game. I am hoping I get to an area like Damonta at some point that feels more...inhabited. A lot of the areas, when we leave them they are kinda...dead hulks. You never really get to see them. From the sounds of it, that will change though.

If I was just judging by 'map I'd want to spend time in the most' - it would be the Ranger Citadel. There's tons of interesting 'little things' in it. It feels more alive then any other map by far. It doesn't have any conflict really (in the big plot sense) - but it has a lot of reasons to make it useful, to make me want to go back and gain value from it, aside from the Plot Reasons. I wish more areas had those little 'touches' to their vendors and so on, different possibilities to make me want to decide where to spend my time. But obviously, time is always a constraint. I think its definitely the best well designed area I've seen so far, but obviously, not a combat area.

Best area: TITAN PASS + temple without a question
-very interesting laws to follow
-2 secret areas and a big secret to be revealed
-probably the funniest moment of the game where the 2 travelers send the monks to settle their dispute
-very interesting endings and decisions to make (lesser evil)
-probably the game's hardes fight (optional)
-game's only infiltration part (optional)

Worst area SANTA FE SPRINGS
-uninteresting
-ranger team gets eaten by dogs, you lost contact with citadel and the last chopper. So what do you do? You tell the locals you are ready to solve their problems!
-let's fix the walls but leave the gate open for more dogs...
-...and leave the most qualified and highest ranking ranger alone in the base that even stupid dogs can infiltrate
-storage chest gets teleported in the building, no need to get it from the chopper - magic!

I'm split between the AG Center and Titan Canyon.

- The AG Center has a decent amount of puzzling. It reminds me of certain Fallout 1/2 areas. I don't think I ever saw that much puzzling in the game again. It's nice having to stay on my toes to avoid those exploding pods/pod people.
I like the huge vegetables and other graphical greenness, the cows etc. In the dead wasteland it's really a garden of eden. If we'd ever have an apocalypse in real life, I hope I get to work in a place like that. :)

- Titan Canyon keeps crashing for me, so that's a minus. But I'm going to take that out of account for now.
It's a very large area. Visually appealing, I like the grand canyon-like visuals.
It has a ton of weird encounters, DBM, Raiders with Monks, Raiders without monks, a bunch of NPC's with quests and several people who blow eachother up/get blown up. Seemed there was something to do around every corner.
In contrast, there are a lot of areas in the game that feel empty.

On one hand it's kind of depressing, insane monks, power hungry DBS, murdering raiders, and inbetween the few normal people who try to reach the other end of the canyon with their life support functions still intact. On the other hand, it creates an interesting atmosphere.
Add to that the choice of handing the Canyon to the monks, DBS or leaving it to chaos.

My favourite was the start of LA, no particular area but how you would roam around and respond to distress call, sort of regular ranger work. Wish there was more of that in AZ before Highpool/AG centre calls.
